Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

This book made me cry because I knew that these happenings are very frequent I remember that an office thought that a black man had a gun, but it was a phone, A PHONE!!! How does this📱look like this🔫? It just gets me mad so I hope the people that reading this book that equal rights are not real here in the US and that we should do something to fix that!!!

This book is great, it kept me interested and no I repeat no book has ever done that before. The book story line is perfect and it’s the perfect book for anyone 13-18. The book also gives light to anyone that doesn’t know or understand that things like this can and most likely are happening in the world. 10/10

As a white girl, this book has completely changed my point of view for everything. It’s completely inspirational, and really opens your eyes to the racial discrimination in America and honestly all over the world. I’m incredibly sorry to anyone who is has been racially stereotyped, or hurt because of the color of their skin. It’s heart breaking. This book trying has made me more aware of what people have to go through.

It is so amazing book ever I have read so far, I spent my day to catch up and I was really shocked about it, it opened my eyes that someone shouldve go jail for shot the black guy, it made me feel more afraid of being around with white cops , I really do love that book plus I watched that movie few weekends ago and I didnt finish it because I had bad breakdown and that book made me feel more angry, sad, happy, laughs, and disappointed at same time because I have many feelings mixed in me. I really dont like it but that book is really good, it made me feel like want to throw up sometimes because I can see Starr going through like that, it made me feel more emotional inside me. I love it. I hope you can keep writing more.
